Love the look of bamboo but scared it'll get out of control? Tiger grass is for you! If you didn't know better you'd think it's bamboo but it's actually a clumping grass. It's fast growing and excellent for screening; for this purpose I'd plant it 1 to 1.5m apart. Whilst it's very low maintenance it does benefit from a good chop back every couple of years so you can get rid of any dead growth and it comes back looking fresh. If you do this just before the growing season (which is Summer for us in NQ), it'll come back nice and quick. The leaves can also be used as animal fodder so it could be a nice dual purpose plant for rural folk! Best in full sun or part shade.
